Background of the Study
Falls are a leading cause of injury and death among elderly individuals, with physical inactivity being a major risk factor for falls. In Adamawa State, where the elderly population is growing and healthcare resources are limited, the prevention of falls through physical activity programs is a crucial area of concern. Engaging in regular physical activity has been shown to improve strength, balance, and coordination, which are essential for preventing falls among older adults (Ojo & Ibrahim, 2024). Although physical activity is widely recommended as an intervention for fall prevention, the specific impact of physical activity on reducing fall risk in elderly individuals in Adamawa State has not been thoroughly investigated. This study will examine the relationship between physical activity levels and fall risk in elderly individuals residing in Adamawa State.
Statement of the Problem
In Adamawa State, the incidence of falls among elderly individuals is high, with many cases leading to severe injury or death. Despite the known benefits of physical activity in reducing the risk of falls, there is insufficient research on how physical activity programs specifically impact fall prevention in this population. This study will address the gap in knowledge by investigating the relationship between physical activity levels and fall prevention among elderly individuals in Adamawa State.
Objectives of the Study
To explore the relationship between physical activity levels and fall risk among elderly individuals in Adamawa State.
To assess the impact of regular physical activity on preventing falls among elderly individuals.
To recommend strategies for increasing physical activity participation among the elderly to reduce fall risk in Adamawa State.
Research Questions
What is the relationship between physical activity levels and the risk of falls among elderly individuals in Adamawa State?
How effective is regular physical activity in preventing falls among elderly individuals in Adamawa State?
What strategies can be implemented to promote physical activity among elderly individuals to prevent falls in Adamawa State?
Research Hypotheses
There is a significant negative relationship between physical activity levels and fall risk among elderly individuals in Adamawa State.
Elderly individuals who engage in regular physical activity are less likely to experience falls than those who do not participate in physical activity.
Physical activity programs targeting elderly individuals in Adamawa State will significantly reduce the incidence of falls.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly individuals in Adamawa State who are at risk of falling and those who participate in physical activity programs. Limitations include challenges in accurately measuring physical activity levels and fall risk, as well as potential bias in self-reported data.
